Important Information on School Delays and Closures

As winter weather approaches, we want to remind you how the Kennewick School District makes and communicates decisions about school delays and closures due to inclement weather.

When No Notification Is Posted
If you do not receive a ParentSquare delay or closure notice, school is running on a regular schedule.

How Weather Decisions Are Made
When considering a delay or closure, the district reviews several important factors, including:
  • Road conditions and the ability of buses, staff, and families to travel safely
  • The capacity of maintenance crews to clear parking lots, sidewalks and bus loops.
  • Weather forecasts and the likelihood of worsening conditions. Note: The district may decide to delay or cancel school the evening before when forecasts point to more severe weather on the way.
When You'll Hear From Us
  • We aim to notify families by 6:00 a.m. if a two-hour delay or closure is necessary.
  • Information will be posted on the district website and sent via email, phone and text through ParentSquare.
  • If you do not receive an alert by 6:00 a.m., schools will follow a normal schedule.
Note: In some cases, a two-hour delay may be changed to a full closure due to worsening conditions. A final decision will be made by 7:30 a.m., and families will be notified immediately.

Family Choice & Safety
We understand road conditions can vary across the district. As always, we respect your decision if you choose to:
  • Keep your child home due to local conditions
  • Pick them up early
These absences will be excused with parent permission.

About Two-Hour Delays
If a two-hour delay is announced:
  • The following morning programs will be canceled: AM ECEAP and Keewaydin Discovery Center, AM Tri-Tech Skills Center, AM athletics, music, and activities, high school zero-hour classes, morning breakfast service.

We appreciate your partnership in keeping students safe and informed. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school office or check the district website for updates.
